But as she drove Sophie home with her husband, they got a worrying call from the vets.
Ms Olson told ABC 13: 'It was the doctor herself calling saying: ‘Please get Sophie back here immediately, we gave her euthanasia instead of a rabies vaccine.
‘I immediately took her out of her cat carrier and I held her, talked to her, because I knew that was going to be the last thing she would remember.
‘She was pretty much dying in my arms.'
Back at the vet’s surgery, they gave Sophie oxygen and fluids to flush out the drug but she couldn’t be saved.
She died two days later.
Ms Olson has spoken out in a bid to warn other pet owners to ask more questions of their vet and be vigilant.
Sophie had only meant to have a routine check-up and the rabies vaccine when the alleged mix-up happened.
The veterinary surgery declined to comment.
